A multi-disciplinary approach to cancer care
Their approach to healing involves bringing several physicians together from various subspecialties to assess each case, developing a treatment plan that is tailored specifically to each patient and their unique needs. Judging by the successes they have achieved and the incredible dedication of their cancer specialists, it is an approach that is working well, not just for the patients, but for their families and loved ones as well.
The changing face of cancer treatment
One of the ways in which the approach to treating cancer has changed is that there is a reduced emphasis on surgery and a greater focus on mitigating risk to the patient’s future quality of life.
This means, for instance, that instead of removing all the lymph nodes from a particular area, surgeons will remove only the ones likely to be cancerous. This reduces the risk of a patient developing lymphoedema, a condition in which swelling occurs in lymph tissue in areas where lymph nodes have been removed.
Along with reduced surgery, treatments can now be highly tailored to each patient and the specific type of cancer they have. This often results in a shortened duration of treatment and can ease the unpleasant side effects—and the after effects, like nerve damage and other chronic issues—that are so common during and following chemotherapy and radiation.
Quality over quantity: it applies to life too
Doctors at MD Anderson know how important it is to be able to enjoy every moment, even during treatment. They know that every patient has different goals in terms of how they want to feel and what they want to do.
For many patients, the only goal is to complete their treatment and be cancer-free and whatever it takes to get there is what they’ll do. Others want to be around for the birth of a grandchild, see their child graduate from high school or college, or attend a loved one’s wedding. For them, the focus is on their quality of life – feeling good enough to be able to be present and enjoy these milestones is really their most cherished goal.
At MD Anderson, the team of doctors and clinicians that treat each patient are willing to put themselves in the patient’s shoes and support them in their decision of how they want to be treated. They understand that each individual’s experience is unique to them and they are there, not to dictate a specific course of action, but to work with them in making decisions that are right for them, supporting their wishes every step of the way.
